There is hardly anything more fun than running through the sprinkler on a hot summer day.
The Word for the Day: Hydration
Even if we are running through sprinklers or swimming it is still important to remember to stay hydrated. If a dog is thirsty they may stick out their tongue and pant. Easy clue to look for. But we don’t always recognize it in our kids and ourselves.
It boils down to more water each day. Soda pop is not a good source of hydration for our kids. Too much pop can wreck their teeth and leech important minerals out of their bones. Coffee or other adult libations, while refreshing, are not the answer either.
The clues that you are getting dehydrated can be thirst, a lack of appetite, fatigue, dry skin. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE ABOUT THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS.
Your kids may not tell you about any of these symptoms as they don’t really recognize them in themselves. It is important for you to keep an eye on this.
And don’t forget the four legged family members. It isn’t a pretty thing when a dog gets heat stroke or becomes dehydrated. Our little Corgi over did it one day last summer (that is not a picture of our Corgi – that’s a german shepard mutt panting after a long run in need of some fresh water) and we didn’t realize it until he crawled up in the shade under a tree and threw up. The kids were freaked out but they also learned quickly what to do and that they didn’t want that to happen again.
Remember: Water Water Water
